Apprentice Training for Operating Engineers

The Apprenticeship program is a combined effort between Operating Engineers Local No. 9, the International Union of Operating Engineers, The Department of Labor, and our Signatory Contractors. The program is designed to give inexperienced people the skills and knowledge to become successful in the trade. The Apprenticeship is a three-year program; during which time, an Apprentice will be required to attend safety and trade related classes, to receive hands on training in heavy equipment skills such as, grade checking, heavy equipment mechanics, maintenance, and welding; and be employed in the trade by a signatory contractor for 'PAID' on-the-job training. Apprentice wages start at 70% of a Journeyman's pay scale. As an Apprentice completes each stage of the training requirements, his or her wages increase by 5% for each step (there are six steps), until completion and graduation as a Journeyman Operating Engineer.

TO APPLY

A prospective Apprentice may apply in person Tuesday through Friday at the Training Site in Watkins from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm, please call before applying. An apprentice must be 18 years of age or older, possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver’s license, have a valid social security card, birth certificate, High School Diploma, GED or equivalent and a OSHA 10 CONSTRUCTION Safety Card. Apprentice applicants must have these documents with them at time of application. All qualified applicants must completely fill out an application to be considered for the entry to the apprenticeship. The individual will be ranked on the applicant list based on the rating he or she receives on the application. The applicant will start the Apprenticeship when he or she is called and accepts the Apprenticeship Standards. Apprentices are added as work becomes available.  Travel is required in the Apprenticeship program. The Program's geographic area is the whole state of Colorado and as Apprentices you will be asked to travel. If you are not willing to leave your home area, or do not have reliable transportation, this program may not be for you.

THE SITE

The Local No. 9 Apprenticeship has a 160-acre training site located east of Denver. There is a mechanics and welding shop, a classroom, and heavy equipment on site available for use in the training of all Local No. 9 members. This is paid for by a contract negotiated amount that is contributed to the Apprenticeship Fund, so there is no out-of-pocket cost to the members for the training. This site has classes and training for both Apprentices and Journeyman upgrade training.
