About IUOE Local 9

The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) was formed in 1896 and currently maintains a membership of 400,000 with headquarters located in Washington D.C. Through the IUOE, our members, whose interests and jobs are similar to yours, have been able to attain the best possible training, wages, working conditions, and benefits. Operating Engineers are those who operate, maintain, and repair heavy construction equipment to build our nations highways, power plants, dams and buildings. In Colorado a hoisting and portable local (323) and a steam shovel & dredgement local (45B) were combined in 1937 with 286 members to form local 9 of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Today Local 9 represents approximately 1,500 members working for over 100 different employers throughout Colorado in such diverse areas a mining, shops, plants, buildings, tunnels, etc. The home office of Local 9 is located in Denver, with two district offices located in Pueblo and Grand Junction.

Local 9's staff includes a Business Manager, Business Representatives, Organizers, dispatcher, and in house Legal Counsel. Local 9 has office and personnel to handle organization financial accounting, member dues, staff communications, and membership items and to offer assistance with pension and insurance benefits. Local 9 has an apprenticeship program, and provides journeyman upgrade training. The Local 9 apprenticeship and training staff includes an administrator and several training instructors. The Local 9 apprenticeship and training program has business offices located at the Denver union hall. The Local 9 apprenticeship and training site is located east of the Aurora Reservoir, in rural Arapahoe County. Once you have paid your initiation in full and have become a member of Local 9, you may take advantage of the training site where you can upgrade your skills. For information on training, contact the Training Administrator located in Denver. Local 9 also has a credit union which provides financial services for Local 9's members and their families. The credit union office is located at the Denver union hall, and has a full-time credit union manager on staff. Local 9's in house legal counsel is available to assist members with work related issues and unemployment compensation claims problems.
